    The fourth chapter of the Midleton Dair Ghaelach series takes us to Kylebeg Wood on the Ballykilcavan Estate near Stradbally, Co. Laois. Situated amidst rolling fields of barley, the native Irish woodland on the estate has been managed carefully and in tune with nature by the Walsh-Kemmis family for thirteen generations, since 1639.

    Kylebeg Wood or ‘An Coill Beag’ in the Irish language, translates as the little wood, and it was in this little wood that native Irish oak was planted in 1820 to replace trees that were felled for shipbuilding during the Napoleonic Wars.

    Today David Walsh-Kemmis manages the stands of majestic oak in Kylebeg Wood, using a ‘close to nature’ forest management system in line with AFI best practice.  Under David’s astute supervision, seven trees were carefully felled to produce the finest Irish oak hogsheads for the latest chapter in the Dair Ghaelach series.

    Distillery

    Midleton is a brand of super deluxe blended Irish Whiskey. The whiskeys are produced at the distillery complex of the same name in County Cork.

    The principal expression is the year dated Middleton Very Rare Vintage blended whiskey. This was first produced in 1984 by Barry Crockett, who had become Master Distiller at Midleton three years earlier. It has been released every year since and is a regular award winner. The 2016 won double gold at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

    Crocket was invited out of retirement in 2011 to relaunch the range. Two new expressions were introduced; the Barry Crockett Legacy bottling, and Dair Ghaelach Grinsell’s Wood.

    For the latter, whiskeys of 15 to 22 years old are finished in barrels of Irish Oak grown on the Ballaghtobin Estate in County Kilkenny. In 2015 Dair Ghaelach was named Irish Whiskey of the Year by both Whisky Advocate and The Jim Murray Whisky Bible.

    The Midleton distillery and brand are owned by Irish Distillers, a subsidiary of Pernod Ricard. Jamesons and Redbreast are among the other brands produced here.
